When in Cebu: The Market by Sugbo Mercado

By on January 5, 2019

The last blogging event I attended back in the Philippines was the preview of The Market by Sugbo Mercado, the first container van food park in Mandaue.

It is managed by the same geniuses behind the hugely successful Sugbo Mercado. Cebu’s version of a ‘hawker center’ if you will. But it became more than just a foodie place mind you. It also became a playground for aspiring restaurateurs in the city.

Spacious and fully covered

Compared to its often crowded sister property at Cebu IT Park, The Market is very spacious (at ~1500 sq meters), fully covered and has ample parking spaces.

We’ve been told that it also has gender-neutral restrooms (although they were not yet ready that afternoon) which could be the first of its kind in Cebu.

I must laud the Sugbo Mercado team for all these welcome changes. They most likely took notes from their previous attempts at Cebu Business Park and at SRP.

The usual suspects and new players too

At The Market, you’ll find the usual suspects – Cribs (my personal favorite is their mee goreng), Kuzina Guadalupe (lechon belly, tuna panga) and Banana Pancake Trail (pad thai, tom yam). They are among the handful of purveyors that survived through the years. These guys know very well by now that the Cebuano market is quite fickle and particularly hard to please.

If you care to notice, nothing is really novel with their concepts. They don’t serve ‘Instagrammable dishes’ by most standards either. They only serve good food and one that particularly provides the best bang for every buck.

The new players at The Market can definitely learn a thing or two from them. Speaking of which, I saw a stall that served Chicago deep dish pizzas, Curry Point (an affordable Indian corner) and Cheggs (Japanese cheese tarts). I hope they are still around, and the other vendors I’ve yet to try, if I should find myself again in these parts.

Now, traffic jams in Mandaue could be really notorious. But so is Cebu’s lately. Those who are especially fed up with the latter might find some silver lining at The Market by Sugbo Mercado’s operating hours – they open earlier (at 4 PM) and not just on weekends (Tuesdays – Sundays).

He likes museums, spicy food and talking with habal-habal drivers. For now, he's still deciding on whether to play Pokémon GO or not.
