An unassuming chicken wings place
Although Southside Chicken Wings is quite near my apartment, I was able to visit this unassuming open-air restaurant only a few days ago. This was largely in part because of a colleague’s glowing recommendation – that she finds their affordable wings delicious and cooked home-style as well.
I find that interesting because like most successful ‘chicken wings places’ in Cebu, Southside also started right at the owner’s very own garage. It’s located along Humabon Street in San Antonio Village, a quiet neighborhood not far from Montebello Villa Hotel. You might miss this place if not for a signage posted by their gate.
For my very late lunch last Saturday, I settled for their Classic Buffalo Wings, which is said to be the dish that started all this and a very heart-stopping Spicy Pork Sisig (Php79). I was actually eyeing their ‘lutong-bahay‘ pork chops but it was not available that afternoon. I paired all these with their Ilonggo-Style Garlic Rice (Php20) and a cup of coffee.
The latter is actually not part of their menu, but I am glad they obliged with my unusual request. Well, I would have wanted to order a bottle of cold beer that time, but they don’t serve alcoholic beverages.
My chicken wings were well seasoned and properly cooked by the way. For eight pieces, it’s surprisingly priced at just Php159. It packed some heat that may be tempered with its accompanying garlic-mayo dip. But I think that I’d enjoy more their tangy-sweet Cajun Glazed Wings (Php129), which is said to be one of their best kept secrets. I’ll definitely try this and their mojos next time.
The good thing with Southside is that all your orders here are never pre-cooked here. Service could then be understandably slow as a result, but like every other beautiful thing in this world, freshly cooked chicken wings are worth waiting for.
I would not be surprised if Southside would grow up to be a full-fledged restaurant soon. Prices would not be as dirt-cheap anymore as the exorbitant rent and utilities must now be factored in the picture. What was once your favorite secret hangout will be everyone else’s too.
Ram Preston, the chef behind Southside Chicken Wings, does recognize that inevitability in our brief chit-chat. He added though that he’d probably just launch an entirely new restaurant concept elsewhere and keep his chicken wings place tucked in this part of the city, for now at least.
