Jose Rizal arrived at Santa Cruz Beach in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte at around 7:00 PM on July 17, 1892. He was exiled in this part of the Philippines by virtue of a decree issued by Governal General Eulogio Despujol due to various controversial books and proclamations he has authored.

Rizal’s party that night included Captain Delgras and 3 artillery men. He wrote in his diary that the beach at Dapitan was gloomy and dark. This was then his first evening of his 4-year exile in Dapitan.
